YEAR-IN-REVIEW: FRESHMAN 2014-2015
Wow, it is unbelievable that I have already survived my first year of college! Despite the countless stressful moments throughout the previous year, I can honestly say that the knowledge I gained was worth all the hard work. Just last year I was learning high school US history and Calculus, and now, I am on my way to perfecting my skills in sewing, drawing, and design.
During my first year at UC, I made many important realizations necessary for success. I realized the importance of self-care. Sleep is extremely underrated by college students, and I certainly underestimated its importance as well. I recognized that no matter where I may be, it is essential that I make connections with those surrounding me. I entered UC alone not knowing a single other person. I left UC at the end of spring semester being able to walk around campus and see someone I know almost anywhere I go. Additionally, I discovered the perfect balance of schoolwork and leisure time. Even when there is hours of homework left to complete, it is still important to take a break and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Besides all the typical lessons first year college students learn, I also would love to share some of my favorite memories from freshman year. In October, I was assigned my first fashion-oriented project, The Body Mantle. I was very apprehensive about my major, but my decision to pursue fashion design was confirmed when I created a dress only using CD discs and Kroger bags.
In March, I was given the opportunity to travel to New York City where I was immersed in the NYC fashion district. I had the pleasure to meet several designers, visit showrooms, and be exposed to future trends at forecasting agencies. It was a huge honor to be welcomed into some of the top design companies.
The last night I spent in Clifton before returning home for the summer I had the pleasure of working at the DAAP Fashion Show. I saw firsthand the works behind-the-scenes of a professional fashion show. Pins flying, models running, zippers breaking, it was an unbelievable first exposure to the backstage of a fashion show. I can still hardly believe that I was given the responsibility of dressing a professional model in custom-made clothing. Seeing the upperclassmen send their designs down the runway sparked my excitement even more to continue my education.
Although I have completed my first year at UC, my freshman year of college continues on for another six weeks. On May 31, I will be leaving for a summer studying abroad in Ireland. I am extremely excited to travel abroad and return with lots of pictures and stories to share! I am certain that my second year at UC will be even more fulfilling than my first, and next year I hope to report back with even more lifelong memories!
Below are pictures of my friends, family, and other adventures from this past year.
Some featured photos are my brother's ordination to the Catholic priesthood, my precious nieces and nephew, my paint chip decorated dorm wall, the senior capstone fashion show, and my friends with special needs back home in The Penguin Project's production of Godspell.
